What is Your Style?

We all have a style and these clients were not any different! this newly wed couple has spent the last year in Singapore for work during COVID. It was short lived before they moved back to phoenix and needed to buy a new home, since they rented their old home to move to Asia. My clients have a deep connection to the asian culture and wanting to marry an asian theme with their modern style. Not knowing where to start the bought a traditional Phoenix adobe home in the mountain! While the home didn’t scream their style they loved the location and pool in the back yard. When My client were referred to me they really didn’t know what their style was. Like most the beauty can some times blind the logic of function.

Where Do We Start?!

“Anything but beige, brown and blue floors!”

Like most of my clients their biggest problem is they don’t know where to start! I would say the hardest part is not knowing what you like but knowing how to start to get your desired results. From the photo above you can tell my sweet clients bought a home but didn’t love much about it aesthetically speaking. There are many things they dislike about this house, but number one was the flooring. Between the flooring, baseboards, paint colors, and layout we needed to change it all. We had a choice with budget to start with the big things or to do the majority (95% of your house & furniture) and then finish other things later. They opted for the furniture and the renovation for the smaller spaces. Functionality for the majority was more important to them with the budget they had.
The Flooring, baseboards, and furniture for 4 rooms and lighting were the most important things to my clients.

The question is where do we start?! There is always a series of questions I ask to understand what is the most important to them. What is your style? What do you use daily? What space is the most important? What do you envision your space as? Does the space function for you currently and if not what do you want and need the space to be?

When asking a whole array of question it gives me a great idea of the how functional they want and how they plan to use the spaces in question. It is beautiful to see how most of my client don’t actually know how they want to use their spaces. The whole reason I have a job is because it can be difficult to see big picture. Especially for large or particularly small spaces that are unfunctional as they are. it could just be the layout of furniture, the furniture its self but it could be that the space isn’t serving their needs for storage, or they have lack of use for a space that seems wasteful. Once figuring out the functionality we can make it aesthetically beautiful to them.

Options, So many Options

Home sweet home! So many options! We tend to give just a few options for paint colors, flooring and furnishings. Has anyone been to The Cheese Cake Factory? I find it over whelming with too many options, there is just too many things to choose from and I hate to say nothing is spectacular. In this day and age there are hundreds and thousands of options to choose from. It can be very over whelming/ stimulating with too many options. One of the main reason clients are clients at all is because they don’t know what to choose big picture & it isn’t for lack of options. We had decided the flooring was a big issue for them. They hated the colors, the size of tile & the 1’ 1/2” baseboard that would diminish when we replace the flooring. I presented 4 flooring, 3 paint combination options & baseboard sizes. The different combinations and availability swayed our options. We picked Swiss Coffee for the walls and Thunder on baseboard by Benjamin Moore.

It wasn’t for effort that we picked a flooring that was in stock one day and gone the next. Offering another two options in stock on hold from one of my favorite reps. This is important as a designer to have relationships that can benefit you & your clients! My clients chose a beautiful Vinyl plank flooring that had significant variation in color. At first I was worried about the variation! There could have been significant variation in color tones & the look of the tile. Lucky it was perfect!

In fast fashion we were able to get an amazing flooring at a great savings and luckly I was able to get them installed quickly Last minute , with baseboards that are 5-1/2” in sized! We rounded up material and managed to get flooring and baseboards installed for our paint to get done on time. In construction we say “be prepared, that is may not be done on time.” Since the floors were a last minute decision and supplier with building materials and furniture are having a hard time being shipped and sourced. I fully expected us not to have the flooring and baseboards done before there originally scheduled painting date. Which was a week away! We did end up pushing it out 1 month but we got the floor installed and baseboards with time to spare for paint.

Who Does Love A Great Before & After

This flooring variation is very beautiful!

Waiting, Waiting, and Waiting

At this paint in life sourcing furniture was a long endeavor. Everything has extended wait times, shipping delays, fabric shortages, prolonged and cancelled orders. Sourcing 2 custom couches that were over 12 weeks to for delivery because of fabric shortages and 3-4 weeks for delivery. It is a hurry up and get things done before to wait for the next thing to show up. It can be frustrating for most when things take along time to get here. I love clients who are willing to pick things they love and reap the reward of waiting vs. getting something because you need it now. We did end up buying a cheap couch off Facebook makes place & dining table and chairs just so they had something to sit on!

I can’t wait to Share what the our final product is going to be! Follow us to see how the project take form.
